What: Food Packaging Event
Where: Abington High School
When: Nov 23, 2019
Why: On any given day, there are 43,000 people in Plymouth County who don’t know where their next meal will be coming from

Last year’s Community Food Packaging Event event, organized by Jeff Stone from the Joy in Christ Lutheran Church in Abington was the second largest of its kind in Massachusetts. They packaged over 100,000 meals for distribution to food banks in Brockton, Bridgewater, Pembroke, Hanson, Hanover, Hull, Plymouth and Carver, plus a “backpack program” in Brockton where food is sent home from schools in kids’ backpacks on a Friday afternoon, to be sure that families have nutritious meals to eat over the weekend. The organizers for this event discovered that there was a need to replenish the shelves in our food pantries after the Thanksgiving holiday, because Food Bank stores become depleted around the holidays. And although this began as a church initiative, it has grown to become a community-wide event.

Raw food for the meals is purchased through The Outreach Program, a non-profit agency in Union, Iowa.  Incredibly, 25 cents can fund materials for one meal, and a team of 10 volunteers working around a 10 foot table in assembly line style can produce approximately 5,000 meals in two hours.

Volunteers can stand or sit, with no heavy lifting required. There will be others on site to do all the required lifting.

On any given day, there are 43,000 people in Plymouth County who don’t know where their next meal will be coming from

Come help us reach our goal for 2019: To package a record-setting 250,000 meals on this single day to feed the hungry here in Plymouth County
